Broken Hill

There's not a second of this Australian underdog drama that you can't see coming from across the Outback, but some charms emerge in the telling. Teen Tommy (played by newcomer Luke Arnold) dreams of being a classical composer, so when he and a cute American student (Alexa Vega, all grown up from "Spy Kids") get in trouble, he gets them an assignment training a prison choir and band -- all while keeping the secret from his sheepherder dad (Timothy Hutton, rocking a hard Aussie accent). Writer-director Dagen Merrill (son of legendary Utah filmmaker Kieth Merrill) artfully captures the Australian settings and Luke's flights of musical inspiration, and he finds a new heartthrob in Arnold. By the movie's musical finale, which cribs liberally from the ending scenes of "August Rush" or "Mr. Holland's Opus," it's hard not to be rooting for this heartwarming movie.
